What does it mean to be a man?

What makes a man? To answer this question, London-based directorial duo Kaj Jefferies and Rosie Matheson shot this raw and unfiltered Super8 portrait to provide insight into British youth and their experiences of gender identity in the modern world. Revealing what lies behind the facade, their film challenges our socially prescribed preconceptions of traditional maleness.

"The film reveals an incredibly raw and truthful image which is reflected in the very nature of [our decision to shoot] straight onto film," the directors explain. "There are imperfections, there is only one take, and there is no hiding. It creates an honest and very personal portrait of the subject. The film is a tribute and testament to the young men who have revealed themselves to us so faithfully."

Warp Speed Chic

Arctic Monkeys – Warp Speed Chic (Full Film)

Director: Ben Chappell

"After spending a year documenting Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino I wanted to try and pull it all together in a short film. I spent a few weeks with the band in France documenting the recording process with my 16mm camera in September 2017. At that point I was still only hearing bits and pieces of the tunes as they were being recorded. Nearly a year later, I was on stage with them in Lyon France, shooting some of those same tunes. When the film came back from the lab I put the live songs next to my shots of them recording and found it to be quite nice. With that as a starting point, I then used James Ford's instrumental mixes of the album and I put an assortment of the images we created for this album overtop, giving a glimpse into the last year and the full progression of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino." - Ben Chappell

A Train in the Sahara

At more than 430 miles long, the Mauritania Railway has been transporting iron ore across the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert since 1963.

One of the longest and heaviest trains in the world, the 1.8-mile beast runs from the mining center of Zouerat to the port city of Nouadhibou on Africa’s Atlantic coast. The train is the bedrock of the Mauritanian economy and a lifeline to the outside world for the people who live along its route.

Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin

Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin is the first feature documentary film about Ursula K. Le Guin, a singular writer who defiantly held her ground on the frontier of American letters until the sheer excellence of her work, at long last, forced the mainstream to embrace fantastic literature.

Viewers will accompany Le Guin on an intimate journey of self-discovery as she comes into her own as a major feminist author, inspiring generations of women and other marginalized writers along the way. To tell this story, the film reaches into the past as well as the future – to a childhood steeped in the myths and stories of disappeared Native peoples she heard as the daughter of prominent 19th century anthropologist Alfred Kroeber.

Le Guin’s story allows audiences to reflect on science fiction’s unique role in American culture, as a conduit for our utopian dreams, apocalyptic fears, and tempestuous romance with technology. Le Guin, by elevating science fiction from mind candy to serious speculation, has given permission to younger mainstream writers like Michael Chabon, Zadie Smith, and Jonathan Lethem to explore fantastic elements in their work.

More than ever, we need to perform the kinds of thought experiments that Le Guin pioneered, to ask how we might behave as our technologies transform us beyond the wildest dreams of our grandparents. Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin explores what science fiction means to us now, and shares the story of the unassuming mother of three who showed us the limitless power of the imagination.

The Idea of North

Glenn Gould tells the tale of a student's winter journey from Toronto to distant Winnipeg with images and music reflecting the majesty of the North.

"I've long been intrigued by that incredible tapestry of tundra and taiga which constitutes the Arctic and sub-Arctic of our country. I've read about it, written about it, and even pulled up my parka once and gone there. Yet like all but a very few Canadians I've had no real experience of the North. I've remained, of necessity, an outsider. And the North has remained for me, a convenient place to dream about, spin tall tales about, and, in the end, avoid. This programme, however, brings together some remarkable people who have had a direct confrontation with that northern third of Canada, who've lived and worked there and in whose lives the North has played a very vital role."

Winter's Watch

“You have to be at peace with the fact that something might happen, and you might not make it through,” says Alexandra de Steiguer, the caretaker for the Oceanic Hotel, in Brian Bolster’s short documentary, "Winter’s Watch." De Steiguer has spent the past 19 winters tending to the 43-acre grounds of the hotel, on Star Island, which sits 10 miles off the coast of New England. In the long, wintry off-season, she is the island’s sole inhabitant.
