Baz does Advertising

From i-D Magazine:

Erdem x H&M have just released the Baz Luhrman-directed short film The Secret Life of Flowers for their collaboration campaign, and as you'd expect from three blockbuster names, it's a grandiose flowerbomb of epic proportions.

There's glamourous boys and girls, an enigmatic matriarch figure, a mansion, unrequited love and a spring that never ends. It's essentially a modern day Great Gatsby, which isn't really surprising given that Baz directed that film too.

Quando já passaram 26 anos e um anúncio já não está a tentar vender-me diretamente alguma coisa, talvez eu olhe para ele com um pouco mais de interesse. Posso olhar para estes vídeos como anúncios vintage ao perfume Obsession de Calvin Klein ou como curtíssimas metragens de David Lynch realizadas entre Blue Velvet e Twin Peaks, num dos momentos mais altos da sua carreira.

Acrescente-se que nos anúncios aparecem Benicio Del Toro, Heather Graham e James Marshall (que entraria em Twin Peaks). Cereja no topo do bolo, cada um dos anúncios usa um texto de um grande autor literário. Por ordem: F. Scott Fitzgerald, D.H. Lawrence e Ernest Hemingway. Aparentemente havia um anúncio Flaubert que se terá perdido.

São tudo curiosidades, claro. Esteticamente são anos 80 puros, pós-modernismo a derivar para a estética remix, e podiam não ser mais que uma derivação de, digamos, Vogue, de Madonna.

I lay awake thinking and my mind jumping around. Then I couldn’t keep away from it, and I started to think about Brett. I was thinking about Brett and my mind started to go in sort of smooth waves. Then all of a sudden I started to cry. After a while it was better and I lay in bed and listened to the heavy trams go by.. and then I went to sleep.
